Late To The Punch, I Know

Hello,

I am Cory J Watkins, an English Major sophomore with a writing minor and plans to get my Masters in Creative Writing upon my graduation. All I want to do is write. I write everything novels, short stories, songs, screenplays, regular plays, poems of every sort, and notes in class to any cute girl that looks like she might fall for my charms. My goal is to craft beautiful works of literature and absorb unfathomable amounts of money for doing so. I know, it's a pretty solid plan.

My parents are very supportive of my choice to pursue my writing, as it is the only thing I like to do that also happens to be a real career choice. Other things I like are dressing wrong for season, rapping, public improv comedy, and flirting. So, yes, they are VERY happy I chose writing. I look forward to exchanging ideas with you all. Wow, that's a lame ending line. THe only thing worse would be ending this post complaining about that lame line.

  1. Hi Cory,

I am Petra from Slovakia and I would like to ask you about your studies with writing as minor.. I am also interested in writing, but here in SVK there is no such thing as Masters in creative writing (the closest thing is studying screenwriting I guess). So I would like to know what your courses are like and to what goals they are oriented. I only attended one course of creative writing which was organized by our local library (but it was quite inspiring).
The other interesting thing in your post is that you want to make a whole lot of money:). As far as I know, being a writer in Slovakia is the same as being a teacher here - not appreciated at all. Except for those authors who are considered to be "commercial" and write literature with no "real value". And there is the question of quality vs. sales. What do you think about it? Is the situation similar in your country?

  2. Yes, the situation is a bit similar here, as it is in most artistic careers. But, my hope is to create something of worth, and be paid at least a respectable amount for it. I am currently in a Fiction Writing class in which students write short stories and are critqued for our work by our peers. I'm the same kind of class for Poetry, as well. It's really cool, and after I graduate I am going to take the Masters course in creative writing. What are you interested in writing?

  3. Thanks for the answer Cory and the best of luck for your Masters.
I am interested in writing because it has always been very cathartic for me. I like exploring new forms and approaches to texts. For now it seems that writing will stay just my hobby... We`ll see.
And why do you write? What do your peers say about your works?

  4. I write because I like to make others laugh. A lot of my peers like my writings, especially my poetry, but a few people get offended by the subject matter I tend to address, such as religious fallacy and hypocrisy, as well sexual orientation and gender roles. I get much more positive feedback than negative, and the negative is almost always just that I hurt someone's feelings. Oh well.

  5. Well that happens.. But I believe that as an author one has to be able to write what he/she wants. Of course there will always be people who will find it disturbing, offending, etc. It may be because people think of literature very differently. What I am trying to say is that some people believe that literature is for entertainment, or should offer advice for life, or should only be serious and so on. Sometimes it can be difficult to let your mind go free with the books you are reading.

  6. Dear Cory,

I really admire everybody who creates something- in your case you create an art, because writing is an art to me. My brain is not mature enough to create something or anything interesting for others. I am curious, have you published anything so far?
I wish you a lot of creative imagination so important for writing!
    Have a nice day,

    Kristina
